Advent Reset: Join BUMC’s Dec. 6 Fasting Prayer
What if you began Advent by slowing down? On Saturday, Dec. 6, BUMC invites the congregation to fast and pray — in whatever way is healthy for you — as we make room for hope, peace, joy and love.
How to Participate
You choose the practice that fits your health and schedule. The goal is simple: create space to listen for God’s presence.
- Skip one meal, fast for part of the day, or fast the full day if appropriate for your health.
- Hydrate well; consider a simple broth or juice if needed.
- Set short prayer pauses: morning, midday and evening.
- Join with a friend or household and encourage one another.
What We’re Praying For on Dec. 6
- Our hearts in this season: Ask that Advent reshape our choices and open us to God’s light that outlasts fear.
- Our church and mission: Pray that BUMC lives the themes of I Believe Even When, serving with courage, generosity and steady hope.
- Our nation and its leaders: Seek wisdom, humility and compassion in public decisions that bring communities together.
- Our world in need of peace: Lift up all who face conflict, injustice or displacement; pray for cooperation that protects human dignity.
Why Fasting Now
Advent teaches us to wait with purpose. Fasting quiets the noise so we can attend to what matters. We trust that God is near — not distant, not indifferent — and that God’s love can shape our lives and our shared life as a church.
Simple Tools for a Meaningful Day
- Light a candle when you begin and when you end your fast.
- Read a Psalm or the day’s Advent scripture and sit in silence for two minutes.
- Keep a small journal; jot names, needs and moments of gratitude.
- Close your fast with a short prayer and a simple meal.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, let’s make a little space and see what clarity grows there. No fanfare — just a community listening together for the One who still brings light.
