Ash Wednesday in Bethesda: Two Services to Begin Lent on Feb. 18

Where will you pause this week to begin Lent? On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Bethesda UMC will offer two Ash Wednesday services—one at noon in our sanctuary and one at 7 p.m. with partner congregations at Concord St. Andrew’s UMC—so you can choose the time that fits your day.

Service Schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026

  • Noon — Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary at Bethesda UMC. A quiet, contemplative service with communion and ashes.
  • 7 p.m. — Montgomery County Southwest Hub collaborative Ash Wednesday service at Concord St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 5910 Goldsboro Road, Bethesda, MD 20817.

Note: There is no morning Ash Wednesday service this year, and there will be no Prayer Bites on Wednesday.

What to Expect

  • Ashes offered on the forehead or hand as a sign of humility and hope.
  • Holy Communion at the noon service at Bethesda UMC.
  • Shared worship with neighboring congregations at the evening service.
  • Unhurried space for prayer, reflection, and turning toward God’s renewing grace.

Why Ashes? Why Now?

Ash Wednesday invites us to remember our limits and lean into mercy. The ashes are a simple sign that we are dust and beloved—called to return, to repair, and to live more wholeheartedly. If you are new to this practice, know that participation is always voluntary and all are welcome.

Looking Ahead: Lent as a Season for Change Makers

This Lent, our community will explore how everyday faith can shape real change. We’ll focus on compassion, collaboration, creativity, and empowerment—practices we see in Jesus’ life that help neighbors flourish. Come with questions and curiosity; bring a friend who could use a quiet reset.

Come As You Are

Whether you stop by at noon on your lunch break or gather at 7 p.m. with friends from across the county, there’s room for you. If the season feels heavy or hopeful—either way—step in. We’ll meet you at the door on Wednesday.
