Ash Wednesday in Bethesda: Two Services, One Sacred Start to Lent

How will you begin Lent this year? On Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026, Bethesda United Methodist Church offers two ways to mark Ash Wednesday—with ashes, prayer, and community at noon in our sanctuary, or at 7 p.m. with partner congregations at Concord St. Andrew’s UMC.

Wednesday, Feb. 18: Choose a Service Time

  • Noon at Bethesda UMC (Sanctuary): A quiet, contemplative service with communion and the imposition of ashes—an unhurried space to pause, pray, and receive a sign of our shared humanity and reliance on God.
  • 7 p.m. at Concord St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church (5910 Goldsboro Road, Bethesda, MD 20817): A collaborative service with congregations in the Montgomery County Southwest Hub, including the imposition of ashes.

Please note: There is no morning Ash Wednesday service this year. Prayer Bites will not meet on Feb. 18.

What to Expect

Ash Wednesday introduces the season of Lent with a simple, honest ritual: receiving ashes as a reminder that we are dust and that life is a gift sustained by God’s grace. Services are reverent and reflective. Come as you are—whether you are returning to church, exploring faith for the first time, or continuing a long-held practice.

  • All are welcome. Families, neighbors, and guests are invited.
  • Come for reflection. Expect prayer, Scripture, and time for quiet.
  • Communion at noon. The midday service includes Holy Communion.

Plan Your Visit

  • Arrive a few minutes early to find a seat and settle in.
  • If evening fits your schedule, join the wider hub community at Concord St. Andrew’s.
  • Invite a friend or neighbor who may be seeking a grounded start to Lent.
