One-Day Reset: Fast and Pray with BUMC on Nov. 1

Feeling stretched thin as the holidays approach? What if you set aside one meal this Saturday to pray with your church family and listen for God’s guidance?

What’s Happening on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025

On the first Saturday of each month, BUMC invites the congregation to join in fasting and prayer for our ministries and mission. On Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, you’re encouraged to fast a meal or two—or the full day—according to your health and needs. If a food fast isn’t wise for you, choose a non-food fast (such as social media or screens) and devote that time to prayer.

Please use common sense and consult a medical professional if you have health concerns. Hydration is important; water and necessary medications always come first.

How to Take Part

Choose your fast

  • Skip one meal and spend that time in prayer.
  • Try a partial fast (liquids only for one meal) if appropriate for your health.
  • Pick a non-food fast: step away from social media, streaming, or unnecessary spending.

Set a simple rhythm

  • Morning: Offer a short prayer for BUMC and your neighbors.
  • Midday: Read a psalm (for example, Psalm 23 or Psalm 46) and take a brief walk.
  • Evening: Journal one thing you noticed and one thing you’re praying for next.

Pray with focus

  • Financial faithfulness: Pray that we meet pledges, fully pay apportionments, and steward resources well.
  • Interfaith Thanksgiving service: Ask for a safe, meaningful joint worship with Congregation Beth El as BUMC hosts.
  • Pastors and staff: Pray for strength, wisdom, and joy as they prepare for Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas.

Why We Fast Together

Fasting makes space to hear what we usually miss. In quiet hunger or intentional pause, we remember our dependence on God and seek how God leads BUMC. This shared practice connects us across kitchens and schedules, uniting our prayers for the good of our community.

Practical Tips

  • Write your prayer points on a sticky note and place it where you’ll see it at mealtimes.
  • Drink water regularly; add a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon if needed.
  • If you experience dizziness or weakness, end your fast with a small, simple snack (such as fruit or broth) and continue to pray.
  • If fasting from food isn’t safe, choose an alternative fast and give focused time to prayer.

Set a reminder for Friday night, choose your approach, and jot down the three intentions above. On Saturday, let every pause turn you toward prayer for BUMC’s future, our interfaith partners, and the people who serve. Your quiet practice matters.
