Step Outside the Walls: Join the Wesleyan “Vile-tality” Study and Rediscover Methodism’s Bold Roots
What happens when the church steps into the street? What can today’s disciples learn from early Methodists who refused to stay inside the lines? If you’re ready to explore a faith that moves, this study is for you.
What the Study Is About
Inspired by Ashley Boggan’s book Wesleyan Vile-tality, this study looks back to 1739, when John Wesley preached in the fields of Bristol. Many clergy called his approach “vile.” Wesley embraced the label and met people where they were. Early Methodists broke rules, welcomed outcasts, and carried a bold, practical faith into everyday life. Together, we’ll ask how that same vile-tal spirit can shape our witness now.
Themes We’ll Tackle
- Why early Methodists took church beyond the sanctuary
- Practices that welcomed people on the margins
- How accountability and grace formed communities
- Ways to live a public faith with courage and humility
